A piano solo driven by a steady mechanical pulse — marked ♩=134, come il ticchettio dell’orologio (“like the ticking of a clock”) — over which slowly drifting harmonies form and dissolve.

Cloud Atlas is built on a constant ostinato figure in the left hand that never stops moving, while the right hand traces long, cloud-like lines above it. The contrast between measured time and floating melody gives the piece its cinematic, psychological character.
